arl Strauss Brewery Restaurant Serves Up Championship
Beers.
One
of the most popular restaurants in Carlsbad is right on the
premises of Grand Pacific Palisades: Karl Strauss Brewery
Restaurant. Palisades guests can order room service from the
restaurant as well as charge their tab at the restaurant to
their room.
The restaurant has some great food – mainly a wide
variety of American dishes – but Karl Strauss Brewery
Restaurants have become famous for their Karl Strauss beers,
which are brewed on-site. The Carlsbad location brews six
Karl Strauss beers and keeps five on tap. They are (in order
of popularity) Amber Lager (their “signature beer”),
Endless Summer Gold (Pilsener), Stargazer India Pale Ale,
Red Trolley Ale, Karl Strauss Light, and Downtown After Dark
(brown ale). Can’t decide? You can order the “Taster
6” and sample six different beers!
Who is Karl Strauss? He is the Master Brewer of the Karl Strauss
Brewing Company – the company’s beer guru. Karl designs the brewery operations and processes, formulates the beers produced,
and personally trains the company’s brewmasters. They say he has beer in his blood. His father was president of a small brewery
in Minden, Germany, and Karl was literally born and raised at the brewery, as his family lived on the premises. He attended the Technical
University Munich at Weihenstephan where he earned his degree in the science of malting and brewing.
Karl immigrated to the U.S. in 1939 and landed a job at the Pabst Brewing
Company in Milwaukee – the beginning of a forty-four year career with the company. After rising through the ranks of brewmasters,
Karl ultimately became Pabst’s Vice President of Production and Master Brewer for all of Pabst’s brewing operations. He
held this position for twenty-five years, until his retirement in 1983. Since then, Karl has been in demand as an international brewing
consultant, and the Brewing Company that is his namesake has become the largest distributing microbrewery company in Southern California.
The Karl Strauss Brewery Restaurant in Carlsbad was the fourth restaurant to be built by the company, which has since opened two more
locations. All six locations are in Southern California.
